September 1, 2012New season (hopefully), new name, new logoAs we await the start of the 2012-13 season (we could be waiting a long time, since it appears as of the writing of this blog entry that we could be in for another lockout), I am happy to announce a new name for this website -- The unofficial NHL Uniform Database. How did I get to this point? Let me take you back a few years, to 2009. Back then, the site was simply named for its URL NHLUniforms.com. Then, I had an idea to sell an iPhone-specific version on the iPhone App Store. I was told by the NHL in order to have any chance at doing so, I would need to remove all references to "NHL" from the title to avoid the illusion the NHL was involved in any way. So, that's when I decided to name the site and the app The Hockey Uniform Database. Fast-forward to 2011. I finally get my app done, and I submit it to Apple, which rejects it on copyright grounds, saying they need documentation from the NHL that it's okay for me to sell it on the App Store. I make my request to the NHL, and they reject it, saying that it's not in their best interests at that time. In that same letter, however, they express their support for the website that has always been and always will be free for everyone to use. Let me be very clear here -- I fully respect the NHL's decision and abide by it, and I hope you will too. So a few weeks ago, I realized that I will not be offering a paid version on the App Store (it would have been something like 99 cents or so -- nothing exorbitant) and that the website deals exclusively with NHL uniforms. So I contacted the NHL once again and asked them about legalities of putting NHL back into the website's title. They told me as long as I included the word "unofficial" in it to avoid the false illusion that the league is affiliated with the site, that's fine with them. So with that, and a few logo mockups later, I am proud to present to you The unofficial NHL Uniform Database! |
