1938-39
• Just prior to the season, the league holds a meeting to decide the fate of the Montreal Maroons. The team requested to move to St. Louis, but that was denied after much consideration. So the Maroons disbanded, leaving Montreal with just the Canadiens -- and no team for the city's English-speaking fan base.
• The icing rule as we know it today goes into effect.
• The Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs, four games to one. It's the first best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series.
