• The original Hart Trophy, awarded to the league's MVP, is retired, with all its plaques filled in and its general condition deteriorating. The league introduces the Hart Memorial Trophy in its place.
• Maurice "Rocket" Richard announces his retirement on September 15. He ends his career with 544 career goals.
• Gordie Howe becomes the first player in NHL history to surpass 1000 career regular season points.
• The Chicago Black Hawks won the Stanley Cup, beating the Detroit Red Wings in six games. It marked the first time since 1950 that two U.S.-based teams met in the Stanley Cup Final. It would be Chicago's last Stanley Cup title for 49 years.
