The city of Columbus and the state of Ohio were very influential on the Union Army during the Civil War. Ohio contributed more of its population to the Union Army than any other state. Many of the Blue Jacket uniforms worn by Union soldiers were manufactured in Columbus. To pay tribute, the city's NHL franchise is named the Blue Jackets.
