1952-53
• The first-ever Canadian telecast of an NHL game occurred on October 9. Viewers watched the Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1.
• Marguerite Norris became the NHL's first female owner in nearly 30 years when she inherited the Red Wings after the death of her father, James E. Norris.
• The NHL nearly had a seventh team as a group from Cleveland was approved for a franchise on the condition that they come up with a $425,000 good-faith deposit. When the group couldn't come up with the money, it was told to apply at a later date. Cleveland would eventually get a short-lived NHL franchise with the relocation of the California Golden Seals in 1976.
• The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup, beating the Boston Bruins in five games.
