1949-50
• Beginning this season, the NHL mandates that the ice surface be painted white. This was accomplished by adding white paint to the water before freezing. Prior to this season, no paint was added, leaving the ice surface a dull gray color. By adding white paint, it made it easier to see and follow the puck.
• The Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Rangers in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.
