June 10, 2014Summer previewAs we put the finishing touches on the 2013-14 NHL season, it's time to start looking ahead to 2014-15. The off-season is always a busy time for me in terms of maintaining this website, with new uniforms being unveiled and existing uniforms undergoing a number change with the departures of the ones I had featured. Based on information gleaned from Chris Smith's Icethetics site, here's what we can look forward to this summer, along with some fearless predictions. All this information is preliminary and unofficial; as always, I will see the new uniforms for the first time when you do. • The Blues will likely be getting new home and away uniforms. I'm not expecting any drastic changes; I predict that the logo and colors will remain the same, but the jerseys will have more traditional striping and will lose the vertical piping. • The Ducks are expected to get new uniforms. It's a pretty safe bet that orange will be featured more predominantly and that the crest will revert to the webbed D. What's unknown is whether they'll unveil new home and road designs or promote their alternate to their regular home uniform and unveil a matching road uniform. • When the rechristened Arizona Coyotes take the ice next season, they will do so in mostly unchanged uniforms. The only change is on the patch worn on the left shoulder, with AZ replacing PHX at the bottom of the state silhouette. The Coyotes have also said to expect a throwback uniform to be worn on a few occasions next season. And word on the street is that the alternate uniform they'd worn for the past six seasons is being retired. • Speaking of alternate uniforms, you can likely expect new ones from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders. We know that the Penguins' new alternates will take the design of the uniforms they wore when they won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992, complete with their original shade of gold. Tampa Bay's new alternates will likely be black, and there's a good chance that the Islanders will make the jerseys they wore in the 2014 Stadium Series their new alternates. • The Kings have announced that the uniforms they will wear for Legends Nights will be their original gold uniforms (with purple pants). The team has said those uniforms will still be classified as one-offs and not full-fledged alternates. • We can expect a special uniform from the Washington Capitals as they host the 2015 Winter Classic (the venue and opponent are still to be determined as of the writing of this blog post). • The NHL is once again planning on holding the Stadium Series. Sites and participants have yet to be determined. |
