• Financial problems start taking its toll on a few teams. The Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres play much of the season under bankruptcy protection, with the Senators not being able to pay its players at one point. Both teams were eventually sold to local businessmen who kept them in their respective homes.
• The New Jersey Devils win their third Stanley Cup in nine years, beating the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, four games to three, with the home team winning all seven games.
