1983-84
• For the first time since 1942, the NHL uses overtime in an attempt to settle tie games. If regulation play ends in a tie, a five-minute overtime period is added. If neither team scores, the game then ends in a tie.
• Harry Ornest purchases the St. Louis Blues prior to the season, preventing them from moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
• The Edmonton Oilers end the New York Islanders' four-year reign, beating them in the Stanley Cup Final in five games, starting their own dynasty. The Oilers avenged their Final loss to the Islanders from the previous season.
