1982-83
• The Colorado Rockies pull up stakes and move to East Rutherford, New Jersey, becoming the New Jersey Devils. It's the second move for the franchise, having moved to Denver from Kansas City in 1976.
• The Hartford Whalers join the Philadelphia Flyers in wearing the long pants known as Cooperalls. The long pants would be retired at season's end.
• The New York Islanders win their fourth straight Stanley Cup, sweeping the Edmonton Oilers in the Final.
