• Due to the Montreal Canadiens' dominance on the power play, the NHL changed the rule, ending minor penalties in the event the team with the man advantage scores. Prior to this season, a team on the power play could score as many goals as it could in the two minutes of penalty time.
• The Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins, four games to one, to win their second straight Stanley Cup.
