Being one of the northernmost teams in the World Hockey Association, the team was nicknamed Nordiques, a French word that literally translates into "people of the north." When spoken in French, the "s" in Nordiques is silent (when spoken in English context, most commentators pronounced the "s."). The nickname stuck when the team moved to the NHL in 1979.
