Welcome to the new site!

After what seemed like an absolute eternity, the Hockey Uniform Database -- the all-new NHLUniforms.com -- is finally up and running! I started working on the project when I had the idea of turning the original site into an iPhone app (that's coming -- stay tuned). After starting to convert the artwork, I decided to give the site a massive facelift.

One think I'm sure you've noticed right away is a way to search uniform histories by team in addition to by season. This move was made after a great many requests for such a method of navigation. The team-by-team section also contains some interesting tidbits of information on how each team came up with its nickname -- info courtesy of Frank Fleming and the Sports E-cyclopedia.

You'll notice that the images, aside from being considerably larger than the ones on this site's predecessor, appear much cleaner. That's because I'm using a different file format. On the old site, all the images were .gif's. Now, all the images are .png's, which means no more distorted colors! Unfortunately, for those of you who enjoyed the cutesy animations I did on the old site, that means those animations are gone.

Also gone are the decade themes and image lighting effects (you know, how the border appears to light up when you roll your mouse over it). I decided to give the new site a more business-like approach, figuring that the real star of the site should be the uniforms themselves, not my creative ability (or the lack thereof).

One note about the name -- you'll notice that the letters "N-H-L" are not part of the website's official title. No, don't worry, there was no adverse action taken by anyone. I was talking with someone from the National Hockey League regarding possible legal issues behind doing an iPhone app, and he recommended to me not to use any part of the NHL's logo, name, initials, etc. as part of the title for my app and website. So I told him no problem and that I had an alternate name and logo in mind.
