1979-80

Pittsburgh Penguins

On the heels of championships won by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers, the Penguins changed their colors in January 1980 to black and gold, matching those of their city's siblings. The Boston Bruins objected, claiming they had exclusive rights to the black-and-gold color scheme (despite the Vancouver Canucks changing to black and gold -- and orange -- a season earlier). Citing the colors being worn by the NHL's Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1920s, the Penguins prevailed in their quest to wear black and gold. The Bruins responded by eliminating the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs.
