1977-78
Toronto Maple Leafs
3rd place, Adams Division lost semifinals
In an act of defiance, the Maple Leafs refused to abide by a new NHL rule requiring names on the backs of all jerseys for most of the season. Their reasoning was a fear of a sharp drop in scorecard sales. Eventually, the Leafs relented -- somewhat. On February 26, 1978, in their game against the Black Hawks in Chicago, they put blue letters on their blue jerseys! The NHL was clearly unamused and threatened to fine the Leafs $10,000 for the stunt. The team eventually relented, putting names in contrasting white letters on their blue road jerseys for the rest of the season. They'd finally add blue letters to their white jerseys in 1978-79.
