TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
a.k.a Toronto Arenas (1917-19), Toronto St. Pats (1919-27) First season: 1917-18 Home arena: Air Canada Centre
Stanley Cups won: 13 (1918, 1922, 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967)
Stanley Cup Finals appearances: 21
When Conn Smythe bought the team in 1927, he renamed them the Maple Leafs, since he once scouted a team called the "East Toronto Maple Leafs." Smythe, a World War I veteran, was very patriotic and liked the grammatically incorrect name's link to Canada's national symbol.
Retired Numbers
5 Bill Barilko
6 Irvine "Ace" Bailey
Honored Numbers*
1 Turk Broda/Johnny Bower
4 Hap Day/Red Kelly
7 King Clancy/Tim Horton
9 Ted Kennedy/Charlie Conacher
10 Syl Apps/George Armstrong
17 Wendell Clark

*The Maple Leafs generally honor their greatest players with an honored number rather than a retired number, so that current players can continue building the legacy of those numbers. The Maple Leafs will only retire numbers of players who experience a career-ending incident while playing for the team. Barilko was killed in a plane crash while an active member of the team, and Bailey suffered a career-ending head injury during a game against the Boston Bruins.
