2006-07

• Amid much anticipation -- and much consternation among uniform purists, the Reebok Edge uniform system is introduced in the All-Star Game. The new uniforms would be worn by all 30 teams the following season.

• The NHL goes to Puerto Rico for the first time ever, with the New York Rangers defeating the Florida Panthers, 3-2, in a preseason game on September 23, 2006.

• For the first time in NHL history, both teams in the previous year's Stanley Cup Final -- the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers -- failed to make the playoffs. Also, the Colorado Avalanche's 95 points were not enough to secure them a playoff berth, setting a record for the most points for a team that failed to qualify for the playoffs.

• The Anaheim Ducks become the NHL's first West Coast team to win the Stanley Cup, beating the Ottawa Senators in five games. (The old Seattle Metropolitans and Vancouver Millionaires have also won Stanley Cups, but their wins came before the NHL was established.)
