• Due to a 103-day owners' lockout, the season does not get underway until January 20th. Teams would play a 48-game regular season, with no games coming against teams from the opposite conference.

• Due to the lockout, the All-Star Game is cancelled.

• For the first time in nearly 20 years, the NHL has a major U.S. broadcast agreement, with Fox televising games. Fox and ESPN would split Stanley Cup Final games.

• With a possible relocation to Nashville looming over their heads, the New Jersey Devils sweep the favored Detroit Red Wings to win their first ever Stanley Cup. Shortly after the Final, the team announces it will stay in New Jersey, eventually moving to a new arena in Newark.
