1926-27
• The Western Hockey League folds, leaving the NHL as the sole major hockey league in North America. As a result, the NHL takes sole possession of the Stanley Cup. The NHL Board of Governors purchased all WHL players' contracts. The entire rosters of two WHL teams, the Portland Rosebuds and Victoria Cougars, were purchased by the expansion Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Cougars, respectively.
• The New York Rangers also made their NHL debuts this season.
• A new trophy in memory of Georges Vezina is awarded to the NHL's best goaltender. The first recipient is George Hainsworth of the Montreal Canadiens.
• In the middle of the season, the Toronto St. Pats were bought by Conn Smythe and renamed the Maple Leafs.
• The Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins, two games to none, to win the Stanley Cup.
