• Tragedy struck the Montreal Canadiens prior to the season as Babe Siebert, who was named coach of the struggling club, drowned along with his daughter. A benefit All-Star game was held in his memory at the start of the season.
• The NHL's first-ever telecast took place on February 25th, as about 300 TV viewers watched the New York Rangers take on the Montreal Canadiens.
• The New York Rangers won their third Stanley Cup with a six-game series win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their fourth Stanley Cup title would come 54 years later.
