• The Atlanta Flames are sold to Canadian businessman Nelson Skalbania and move to Calgary, Alberta, to become the Calgary Flames. They become the first (and to date only) team to relocate and keep its entire nickname intact.
• Wayne Gretzky breaks Bobby Orr's single season assists record and Phil Esposito's single points mark in winning his second straight Hart Trophy.
• The New York Islanders make it two in a row, defeating the Minnesota North Stars in five games to win the Stanley Cup.
