• The NHL is down to six teams with the demise of the Brooklyn Americans. It would remain that way for the next 25 years.

• NHL president Frank Calder suffered three heart attacks, the latter of which killed him. In his memory, the Calder Memorial Trophy is given to the NHL's rookie of the year.

• The Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup with a four-game sweep over the Boston Bruins.
