The nickname of the team's predecessor, the Quebec Nordiques, literally translates into English as "people of the north." With Denver, Colorado, not exactly considered a northern city, the franchise was forced to choose a new nickkname. With the mountainous region prone to avalanches, that provided the inspiration for the franchise's new monicker.
