Buffalo Sabres

1970-77
The Sabres took to the ice in 1970 wearing blue and gold uniforms. With slight variations, they would keep this look for over a quarter century.

1977-78
Thanks to an NHL mandate for the 1977-78 season, the Sabres added names to the backs of both jerseys.

1978-80
In 1978, the Sabres added their logo to the shoulders, and they changed the neck to a V-neck. Also note the different striping pattern on the blue socks.

1980-83
The blue socks changed to two sets of three stripes in 1980.

1983-87
The tail and sleeve stripes became thicker, and the number font changed.

1987-96
The sock stripes thinned out.

1996-2000
When the Sabres closed out the Aud and moved into what was then known as Marine Midland Arena, the team, for entirely inexplicable reasons, ditched their classic blue-and-gold look in favor of new uniforms of black, red and silver.

2000-06
The Sabres added a red alternate jersey in 2000. Miroslav Satan (pronounced shuh-TAAN) stayed with the team until 2004; the uniforms stayed until 2006.

2006-07
The "Buffaslug" (so-named by fans for the logo's lack of legs, both literally and figuratively) arrives in 2006, along with an innovation never before seen in the NHL -- the player number on the upper right chest. Other teams would soon follow suit. To quell fans' dissatisfaction with the new look, the team uses its classic jersey (with front number added for good measure) as its new third jersey.

2007-08
The redesign from the previous season gets directly carried over to the new Reebok Edge uniform system.

2008-10
The Sabres add a new third jersey -- essentially an update to their classic original uniform, featuring navy blue and silver.

2010-12
After four years of fan discontent, the Sabres officially kill off the "Buffaslug" in the summer of 2010. The alternate home uniform becomes the new full-time home uniform, and it becomes the basis of their new road uniform. Also, to commemorate the team's 40th season, the Sabres introduce a new alternate home uniform featuring design elements to pay tribute to Buffalo's hockey past, both before and after the Sabres' arrival.

2013, 2015-17
In the 2013 season and starting in the 2015-16 season, the Sabres went without an alternate uniform.

2013-15
The Sabres introduce arguably the wildest alternate jersey in the history of the NHL, featuring a gold front and a navy blue back. It makes some of the more wild designs from years past look rather tame in comparison. After two seasons, it joins the Buffaslug in the team's scrap heap.

2017-19
The Sabres eliminate the piping and pit stains when Reebok Edge gives way to Adidas Adizero, but they retain the front numbers. The Sabres tried to start a fad by introducing front numbers in the 2006-07 season. Other teams followed suit and eventually retreated, leaving the Sabres as the last team to incorporate them.

2019-20
The Sabres introduce a special gold-trimmed white uniform to commemorate the franchise's 50th anniversary. Prior to the 2019-20 season, the team announced that it would be the swan song for the navy blue uniforms, going back to royal blue starting in 2020-21.

2021-22
The Sabres' uniforms come full circle when the team reintroduces royal blue as their primary color, as the uniforms very closely rememble their originals (with a couple minor differences). With this uniform redesign, the fad of placing numbers on the front of the jersey officially comes to an end -- the Sabres were the last (and first modern) team to feature front numbers.

2022-presemt
The Sabres' goathead jersey that they first introduced in 1996 returns as the team's new alternate uniform.

2001 9/11 Tribute
In the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, in a show of solidarity, the Sabres took to the ice on October 7 against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden wearing NEW YORK across their chests in place of their usual crest. The Rangers did the same (in their own font).

2008 Winter Classic
The Sabres wore replicas of their original white uniform as they hosted the Penguins in the inaugural Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Sabres lost in a shootout, 2-1.

2018 Winter Classic
The Sabres introduce a special uniform as they took on the Rangers at Citi Field. As the designated home team, the Sabres lost in overtime, 3-2.

2021 Reverse Retro
The Sabres break out their alternates from the first half of the 2000s, coloring them in their just-reinstated original palette.

2022 Heritage Classic
The Sabres wore special vintage white uniforms as they became the first U.S.-based team to play in the Heritage Classic series. They beat the Maple Leafs, 5-2.

2022-23 Reverse Retro
Just in time for the return of the 1990s goathead uniform as their alternate, the Sabres re-color said goathead uniform in its current palette for the Reverse Retro program.
