How did you draw all of those uniforms?I drew all the uniforms using Microsoft Paintbrush. I drew outlines of all the elements (jerseys, pants, socks, helmet) and used them as a template. I drew almost all the lettering and numbering freehand. While almost all crests were hand-drawn by yours truly in the previous two versions of this website, most of the crests in this latest version were downloaded, sized accordinly and inserted into the template. While this will diminish the display of art skills (or the lack thereof) of your humble webmaster, the downloaded logos will make for more realistic-looking uniforms. The more obscure logos are being drawn from as clear of photographs as available on the Internet. The logo on the first alternate jersey of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1995-96) remains hand-drawn, and that took over four hours to do!
Can you give me the inside scoop as to what some of the teams' new uniforms will look like? No. If you're looking for uniform designs prior to their release, you've come to the wrong place. No new uniform set will be posted on this website until it's unveiled by the team. NHLUniforms.com respects the confidentiality of such classified information.
Why are helmets no longer included with the uniforms prior to the 1980's?Very simply, they were very rarely used. They did not become an official part of the uniform until the 1980's.
I also noticed that the socks look slightly different in the 1990's and 2000's than in previous decades. Why?In the 1990's (I'm guessing here), manufacturers stopped making hockey socks with stirrups at the bottom, most likely for the players' own comfort.
Why is the 1995 season not referred to as 1994-95?Thanks to an owners' lockout, the season was only 48 games long and did not start until January. Thus, since there were no games played in 1994 of that season, there's no point in calling it the 1994-95 season.
This is such a great website! Ever thought about doing a similar one for the WHA?Be sure to check out WHAUniforms.com, launched May 11, 2004.
I noticed that in denoting the 1999 Stanley Cup champions, you have the shot of Brett Hull's skate in the crease just before he scored the Cup-winning goal. Are you a disgruntled Sabres fan still bitter about that series? No. I was 100% nonpartisan during the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals. That, by the way, is not the only year in which I have a "special" image for the Stanley Cup winner. For 1970, I have the famous photo of Bobby Orr flying through the air scoring his Cup-winning goal, and in 2001, there's Ray Bourque finally getting to hoist the Cup after 22 years in the NHL. By the way, for the record, being a proud resident of Phoenix, Arizona, I am a Coyotes fan.
What about having your work published -- any chance of that happening? If a publisher is willing to turn my work into a book, I'm all up for it!
